Fall @ the DiLL: Pushing Boundaries in Sound, 3D, and AR

During the fall season, DiLL participants immersed themselves in a diverse range of creative explorations. They delved into sound art with René Barge and Gustavo Matamoros, learned the basics of 3-D modeling and scripting with Arcbo T, and explored the exciting world of Augmented Reality with Felice Grodin. Each session offered a unique hands-on experience, inviting artists to expand their skill sets and experiment with innovative techniques at the intersection of art and technology.

September 19, 2024- Sound art and artist talk with René Barge and Gustavo Matamoros

René Barge and Gustavo Matamoros, two-thirds of the Miami-based collective Frozen Music, led an artist talk and immersive sound art performance that transformed the DiLL into a space of deep listening and sonic exploration. Drawing on resonant frequencies from the environment, bioacoustic recordings, and fragments of past site-specific compositions, the artists crafted an evolving soundscape that invited participants to reconsider their relationship with technology, architecture, and the natural world. Through their experimental approach, Barge and Matamoros encouraged a heightened awareness of sound as both a medium and a method for engaging with space and perception.

September 26, 2024- VR Roller Coaster Basics with Arcbo T

In conjunction with LIZN’BOW’s Niñalandia Skycoaster in the project room, artist Arcbo T (Maripussssy) of reggaeton duo Niña led a VR Roller Coaster Basics workshop . This hands-on presentation introduced artists, creators, and programmers to Blender, a free and open source 3D-modeling program available on all platforms, as well as the Three.js JavaScript library which enables interactive art on the web. Participants were encouraged to install Blender and Three.js in advance of the workshop.

Arcbo T is an investee and member of Bow Ty Enterprises Venture Capital (a.k.a. Bow Ty), a human business conglomerate working with time, care, multiplicity, fear, joy, transformation, and enterprise. Bow Ty is best known for their long-running new media project LIZN’BOW with Liz Ferrer, which critiques American and Latin pop through a queer and comedic lens. Together their work spans multiple mediums with a focus on digital art, tech, music, video, and performance art. Their most recent project together includes femme reggaeton band Niña.

Following the workshop, there was an experimental DJ set by Liz Ferrari Ouch inspired by viral internet meme theme songs and sad gatos.

Free pastelitos, snacks, and  refreshments were provided.

October 2024- Augmented Reality (AR) tech demo and workshop with artist Felice Grodin

Felice Grodin led an engaging session on the creative and experimental applications of Augmented Reality (AR), introducing participants to new ways of integrating digital interventions into their artistic practice. As part of her presentation, Grodin provided a beginner-friendly introduction to Adobe Aero, a commercially available AR tool that allows artists to seamlessly create and interact with immersive digital layers in physical space. Through hands-on demonstrations and discussion, attendees explored how AR can expand the boundaries of artistic expression and storytelling.

A visual artist with a background in architecture, Felice Grodin’s experimental and transdisciplinary projects create immersive virtual experiences that overlay new realities onto existing ones. Her exhibition “Felice Grodin: Invasive Species” at Pérez Art Museum Miami (2017–19), which explored themes of climate, morphology, and speculative ecosystems, was the first Augmented Reality work commissioned by a major US museum.

Following the workshop guests enjoyed a performance by Alexandre Merbouti, guitarist and vocalist of popular surf-punk trio Haute Tension.

Presented as part of the Knight Digital Innovation Lab at Locust Projects.
